Summary
Clint, is thirdteen boy who lives in Hood Canal
in the Puget Sound, Washington State. He lives with his mother who loves him,
his father whose a loggers, and his aunt, Aunt Harriet. In the morning Clint
went to the beach for sailing. He promise that he’ll be home before it’s dark.
He met his friend Old Joe, sixty five years old man who gives Clint a creature
in the jar. Then he met the big blond fisherman and his friends, who tells
Clint that they have killed seals. When Clint was done after hunting oyster, he
heard a bleating sound. It was an orphan baby seal. At first Clint try to wait
the baby seal’s mom. But it doesn’t come. He can’t leave the orphan baby seal
to storve. Then Clint carrying it home.
Clint was bring orphaned baby seal to his house.
At first, his mother doesn’t agree that Clint bring the seal to house because
it might caused a lot of trouble. But Clint promise that everything will be
allright. In the next morning Clint and his father stared in wonder that last
night there had been a white seal on brown gunny sacks; now there was a mottled
gray and-white seal on a bed of white. Next morning his aunt ask Clint about
his friends and hobbies, she told Buster
will be good company when he grows up. Yeah, Clint’s friend. In the barn buster
was making little problem. Clint slapped buster and drove him out of the barn.
But Buster didn’t take the lesson to the heart. He accepted being slapped and
hustled out. Buster was intelligent, active and full of fun. But bring Buster
to the barn isn’t a good idea. Then, school was out. Clint and his friends; Len
Decker, who was a year older than Clint, with his young brother Phil; and
George Lawson, who was Len’s age, but smaller and quieter. They decide to go
swimming and going to see Buster’s first swim because Clint haven’t been giving
him swimming lessons. They going swimming at Pleasant Harbor. But at the end
Buster was still a land animal. Buster doesn’t ready to swim.
In the morning summer, when the radio was
playing, Buster was swaying his raised head in time to the music. Clint’s
father think that Buster are supposed to be musical and never be a swimmer
that’s a joke. When Clint and Buster were in the beach, they saw two seals
passed like powerful swimmers. Then they found many geoduck that will be the
scientific studying for Clint. And Clint was make report about it. Although it
caused little problem to Clint’s boat. Clint must swim. He try to teach Buster
to swim. Buster was worried before, after Clint saying Here, Buster! Many
times, there was another snort and Buster was gliding toward him with his head
raised proudly. Buster was did it. He can swim.
When Buster had become a great swimmer, Clint
had feared it would end their companionship. Instead ut had been more like a
beginning. On these summer days they were together almost all the time from
sunrise to late dark. Buster help the Clint’s job, splitting shakes. After
finish the job, Clint’s father tells about the gold in Johnson River. Clint
thinks that the gold of the Johnson River had been almost close enough to
touch. He thaught that someday they would go after it and make it real.
Going back to school hadn’t turned out as Clint
had feared. The worst part had been worrying about what might happen to Buster
while he was away. He had told to his neighbors for miles in every direction
that Buster was his pet seal; they wouldn’t hurt him. But there was always the
danger of his being shot by a stray hunter or fisherman. Buster had never
disappointed Clint, but in these days of autumns rains the boy had to
disappoint the seal. At each home-coming, and when he refused because the
weather was to cold and wet, the seal would pretend to fall over dead with
disappointment. Buster wasn’t around this afternoon. Clint was worrying about
him. But at the same time Clint got a letter from Aunt Harriet about Clint was
being accepted as student in University at departement that studies the ocean.
Somewhere in his mind he thought the letter was the biggest thing that had ever
happened to him. But it had come at wrong time, when he was to worried for
anything about Buster to seem important. Then Clint go to the beach to look
around. His father followed him until both of them were in four hundred feet of
water. They met a lot of killer whales. Clint and his father managed to escape
from killer whales. At home, Clint remembered with sudden dread that killer
whales come into Puget Sound after seals. He thought that Buster were in
danger.
Clint’s dogs, Wolf and Jerry was found Buster
wounded. He’s been shoot. Then Clint play the radio that would help quiet
Buster while his mother and his father taking care of Buster. Clint’s father
told that Buster and Clint is growing up. If Buster doesn’t grow into seal and
Clint into a man something will be wrong. But Clint didn’t want to grow up; not
yet, anyway. Clint was make decision with his father that turn Buster loose and
let him be a seal by spoke to Captain Johanson to take Buster loose in Gardner
Sound.
Clint met
Profesor Wills and his wife that visiting the Clint’s house. Professor Wills
was checking Clint’s bedroom. There are a lot of ocean things there like dried
candlefish that can give a lovely light. Then Profesor Wills were look out
Clint’s notes about Buster. Professor Wills told that Clint can be an
oceanographer. After Professor Wills and his wife was done visiting. Clint were
thinking about Buster on the Snow Queen. Thursday afternoon was a stormy day.
Ot’s about a weeks since Buster were put in Gardner Sound. Clint got a letter
from Captain Johanson that told Buster was a good passenger and he made friends
with everyone. Clint knew that Captain Johanson would get Buster safely. Clint
was readthe ending of the notes which given from Professor Wills that offer the
list of high-school subjects for majoring in oceanography. While Clint sitting
at supper with his mother and his father, Clint thoughts were interrupted by a
rattling of the window. There was as seals’s happy, whiskered face. He was
knocking on the glass with one flipper. It is Buster. Buster was swam a hundred
miles to go to home. Clint asking for his mother to give a chance for Buster.
His mother doesn’t agree at first, then Clint promise that Buster will not gets
into trouble again.
Buster was gone again. Clint might search for
hours without any luck. That would be the last straw. Phone is rang. Clint’s
father answered it. It was sheriff that complain about seal that making any
problem. Clint’s parent doesn’t blame it but Buster is a fine seal but he just
doesn’t fit in. They’ll get rid of him. First the we’ll have to catch Buster.
In the next morning Buster was found bothering the fisherman sailing.
It’s been a long time since Clint’s friends Len,
Phil and George met Buster. Buster had a new friend called Harry. Harry got an
accident, but Buster can brought him out from the boom. Clint’s father are not
going to get rid of Buster. But it seemed to Clint that there was still a
shadow over Buster, and that neither of them could do anything about it.
After
visiting Decker’s house Clint and Buster met Tim Martin, and Joan whose
Professor Wills’s friends. They knew Clint from his paper on geoducks. Buster
likes people but most of fisherman would try to kill him if he were free in the
Sound. And maybe would be able to take Buster to the zoo. But Clint won’t give
him up. Mr. Ives can take Buster.
Clint was offered by Professor Wills to read his
paper at a meeting to Professor Wills’s student. Suddenly he knew why he didn’t
want to read his paper at the meeting. It’s because Buster. Clint think that
it’s really his paper; he did all things Clint wrote about. Now he don’t even
know where Mr. Ives took Buster. But Aunt Harriet told Clint that Buster was having
fun at Ocean beach Aquarium that available in newspaper highlights. Clint feel
glad. Then he continue to read the paper for Professor Wills
